As Nolan Smith, he began his musical career in 1973, rising to be a top studio and JAZZ musician. He was musical director for Marvin Gaye  from 1975-1977. lead trumpet with The Count Basie Orchestra from1977-1978,  Duke Ellington Orchestra with Mercer, Lead trumpet with The Lionel Hampton Orchestra, Capp-Pierce Juggernaut. Traveled and recorded with Eddie Harris, Leroy Vinegar, Jimmy Smith, Barbara Morrison and others.

 

Currently works around the L.A. area with Henry Franklin, Rickey Woodard, Marvin (Smitty) Smith, Josh Nelson, Doug Webb, and MANY others.

 

Other acts he has worked and traveled with include; Aretha Franklin, Natalie Cole, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Phil Collins, Anita Baker.

 

He is a master music producer as well as a songwriter and arranger and leads his own jazz band.
